The German Shepherd is one of the most widely recognized breeds in the world. Known in the UK as an Alsatian, it is hailed as the world's leading police, guard and military dog. However, this dependable breed is more than its 9-to-5 job. Consistently one of the United States' most popular breeds, the German Shepherd is also a loving family companion, herder and show competitor. In popularity, he was Top Dog in Detroit and Miami and took Second Place in Austin, Chicago, Little Rock, Nasville and Tucson. The breed is approachable, direct and fearless, well muscled, alert and full of life.

The German Shepherd originated in 1899 at Karlsruhe, Germany. Derived from the old breeds of herding and farm dogs, the first German Shepherd Dog was exhibited in America in 1907.

The German Shepherd Dog does not give affection lightly and is known for his dignity and stature; it is also known as a "one-man" breed for its tendency to display serious loyalty and fidelity, especially to its owner or main caretaker. His friendship, once given, is given for life.

German Shepards are a brawny athletic breed that can be prone to a variety of mobility issues especially those common to large dogs. Shepards can develop Hip Dysplasia which is an abnormal formation or physical defect in the hip joint, also Elbow Dyplasia which typically affects elbow joints during their growth phase.
