The gentle, intelligent and family-friendly Labrador Retriever continues to be one of the United States most popular breeds, winning first place in 45 out of the top 50 cities surveyed, including: Denver, Des Moines, Kansas City, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, to name just a few. This versatile hunting breed comes in three colors - yellow, black and chocolate - and because of their aptitude to please their master, they excel as guide dogs for the blind, as part of search-and-rescue teams or in narcotics detection with law enforcement agencies. “Labs” are an ideal sporting and family dog. The Labrador Retriever thrives as part of an active family or as a trusted hunting companion.

The Labrador Retriever, despite his name, did not come from Labrador, but from Newfoundland. They were initially used to work alongside fisherman, helping to pull in nets and catch fish that escaped from fishing lines. After being crossed with Setters, Spaniels and other Retrievers, the Labrador Retriever honed its skills as a true retriever.

A common Labrador Retriever health problem that can be eased by using a Pet MRC is Hip Dysplasia. This is the most common orthopedic problem in Labs. Labrador retrievers can develop this skeletal problem which is an abnormal development of the hip joint where the head of the femur does not fit snugly into the pelvic socket. Hip dysplasia is probably due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. If your dog develops hip dysplasia (the condition can be seen on an x-ray), she may suffer no symptoms at all. Or she may eventually experience severe pain and even lameness. If your dog is developing hip dysplaysia symptoms, see your veterinarian and call us to see how our Pet MRC can help. We have been helping handicapped labrador retrievers live happier lives for over 30 years.
