Poodle Breed Information

Poodle

The Poodle is the only breed that comes in three size varieties and, according to AKC ® Registration Statistics, this may be why it is one of the most popular breeds. Poodles popularity ranked in the Top 10 in 40 of 50 major US cities, including: Houston, Denver, San Francisco, Austin, LA, Tucson and Las Vegas. Though often equated to the beauty with no brains, the Poodle is exceptionally smart, active and excels in obedience training.

The Standard variety is the oldest of the three varieties and gained special fame as a water worker. So widely was it used as retriever that it was shorn of portions of its coat to further facilitate progress in swimming; thence came the custom of clipping which is, in fact, necessary to protect the joints and vital organs in cold water.

The Miniature variety may have been used for truffle hunting and the Toy Poodle possesses a wonderful swimming ability and is known for superior intelligence and exceptional learning ability.

The Poodle is said to have originated in Germany. Drawings by the German artist, Albrecht Durer, establish the breed in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was the principal pet dog of the latter 18th century in Spain, as shown by the paintings of the Spanish artist, Goya. And France had Toy Poodles as pampered favorites during the reign of Louis XVI at about the same period.

Medical conditions that can affect pet mobilty in Poodles depend to some extent on the type of poodle. Degenerative Myelopathy is a progressive disease of the spinal cord that occurs in Standard Poodles and can lead to feebleness and incapacitation of their rear legs. Medial Patella Luxation or MPL is a medical condition found in Toy Poodles where the patella or knee-cap becomes disabled and often results in the inablity to bear weight or walk properly. Intervertebral Disk Disease and Hip Dysplasia are well documented and treatable medical conditions in all types of Poodles where Pet MRC wheelchair serves as an excellent mobility aid.
